Which Is Better an Air Conditioner or a Heat Pump?

Which Is Better an Air Conditioner or a Heat Pump?

When it comes to cooling your home in Eden, NC, there are two basic options: a central air conditioner or a heat pump. So which one will do the best job of cooling your home this spring and summer? Read Heat & Air Controllers’ blog to find out.

Heat pump vs. air conditioner: What’s the difference?

So what is the big difference between heat pumps and air conditioners? Well, for the most part, they work exactly the same. Both use refrigerant to force warm air out of the home during spring and summer. However, heat pumps can reverse this process in fall and winter to heat the home as well. Air conditioners only have cooling capabilities, so they need a furnace to provide heat.

Ductless mini splits from Heat & Air Controllers

One of the great advantages of heat pumps is their versatility. Heat pumps also come in ductless models, or mini splits, that can be installed virtually anywhere there is an outside wall in your home. They’re highly efficient, often require minimal installation, and improve indoor air quality. In addition, you can use them to create zones with individual comfort controls to keep the whole family happy.

Furnace heating during winter in Eden, NC

While heat pumps are an ideal efficient A/C option, they do have some drawbacks. When outside temperatures drop below freezing, the heat pump can’t force as much heat back inside the house. This can cause the heat pump to use supplemental heat such as electricity, lp gas, or natural gas. On the other hand, some supplemental heat is quite expensive to use as the main heat source, so heat pumps can provide a very cost effective way to heat your home until temperatures get really cold. When you use gas, these systems are called “Dual Fuel Systems” so you’ll have reliable, efficient heat no matter what. And with the winter we’ve had in Eden, NC, we know that reliable heat isn’t something to be taken for granted!
